About Dr. Ed Hallowell
Edward (Ned) Hallowell, M.D. is a child and adult psychiatrist and the founder of The Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health in Sudbury, MA. He was a member of the faculty of the Harvard Medical School from 1983 to 2004.
A graduate of Harvard College and the Tulane School of Medicine, Dr. Hallowell is an expert at offering practical ways to approach some of life's most difficult challenges. He is the co-author of the national best sellers, "Driven to Distraction" (Pantheon, 1994) and "Answers to Distraction" (Pantheon, 1995), both of which discuss attention deficit disorder in children and in adults. In addition, he has written books addressing emotional issues such as the importance of forgiveness (Dare to Forgive, 2004), worry and anxiety (Worry and When You Worry About the Child You Love), how to raise happy children (The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness, 2002) and many more.
Dr. Hallowell is a frequent speaker on issues that include ADD, how to lead a healthy life, communication strategies for businesses, worry, stress management, and the power of connection. He has published in the Harvard Business Review on the topic of "the human moment" and will again be published in HBR in January of 2005.
Also in January of 2005, Dr. Hallowell and co-author Dr. John Ratey are releasing their much-awaited new book on ADD, "Delivered from Distraction." This book provides a complete and important review of the current state of knowledge about ADD and provides information about how to lead a joyful life with ADD and take advantage of the many wonderful aspects of the ADD mind.
As one of the leading psychiatric experts in the country, Dr. Hallowell has appeared on many national television and radio broadcasts, including 20/20, The Today Show, Dateline, Oprah, Good Morning America, NPR and The View. He is also often interviewed and quoted in publications such as US News and World Report, US Weekend, Newsweek and many other magazines and newspapers.
Dr. Hallowell considers the human moment as valuable in the business world as in one?s personal life. To illustrate that point, he wrote an article for the business audience entitled "The Human Moment at Work," which was published in The Harvard Business Review 1999.
In September, 2004, Dr. Hallowell published his first illustrated children's poem, A Walk in the Rain with a Brain. This story, written for his daughter Lucy almost 10 years ago, tells children "No brain is the same, No brain is the best, Each brain has its own special way." It was published by Regan Books, Harper-Collins, and has been a huge hit with both parents and educators.
The much awaited book on the latest information and treatment for ADD, Delivered From Distraction, was released in January, 2005. This book replaced the best-sellers, Driven to Distraction and Answers to Distraction.
In 2006, Dr. Hallowell released his book CrazyBusy: Overstretched, Overbooked, and About to Snap! Strategies for Coping in a World Gone ADD where he turns what he has learned treating Attention Deficit Disorder into advice on how to cope with rampant busyness, "the problem and the opportunity" of modern life. He explains how to turn "the rush, the gush, the worry, and the blather (which also includes clutter)" into allies, so that one can have the things one wants with the speed, volume and emotional energy of the crazy-busy lifestyle. The roadmap Hallowell offers is helpful; that is, if one can manage to pick this book out of the never-ending stream of stimuli and find the time to read it.
From corporate audiences to parent-teacher workshops, people who listen to Dr. Hallowell come away stimulated, inspired, amused and always better informed. He is a charismatic speaker, combining the knowledge of a Harvard instructor with the warm, easy manner of an experienced public presenter.
Dr. Hallowell lives in the Boston area with his wife and their three children.
